Waterloo Québec Lake Restoration Project

Our goal is to re-inforce the natural processes that will restore and maintain Lake Waterloo with a minimum of human intervention.

This is a long-term approach that focuses on assisting the ecosystem's natural ability to repair and strengthen itself by adding oxygen to the lake, enhancing it's ability to sustain a healthy balance of life, and by helping to reduce harmful sediments resulting from human activity that can degrade water quality. We use non-invasive treatments that avoid large mechanical installations and excavations. Aeration is introduced to strategic areas of the lake to create an environment rich in oxygen to support the micro-organsims that feed on damaging phosphates, nitrates and other organic pollutants. Modern, high-efficiency compressors are used which are designed for silent operation so as not to disturb human and animal populations. All products that enter the lake are constructed of next-generation environmentally friendly materials and contain no harmful metals or toxins. Along with increasxing oxygen levels, another key to the revitalization of Lake Waterloo will be to add safe and natural beneficial bacteria cultures to the water which, when introduced into an oxygen-rich environment, feed on the pollutants and un-wanted algae therby speeding up the process of sludge elimination. Quietely, over a period of years, the lake will become deeper and cleaner, will have less algae and floating scum and will support more fish. Small fountains near the bridge will not only add beauty to Waterloo but will also help keep stagnant surface water moving which prevents insect multiplication. With increasing human population and agricultural activities it is only natural that a lake, even a large one such as Lake Waterloo will begin to show signs of aging and ill-health (this process is called eutrophication) but by initiating measures now to counteract the accelerating water quality issues we will be able to avoid large-scale, costly and environmentally damaging treatments in the future such as dredging. These concerted actions will revitalize the aquatic environment that is at the heart of the community and will have a positive effect on the economic viabilty of Waterloo and on the quality of life for all residents and visitors.
