The LG SONIC XXL system is the most powerful sonic algae control unit available on the market with a manufacturer's claimed effective algae killing range of 150 meters (500 feet). It also kills blue green algae within a range of 400 meters (1300 feet). The ultrasonic transducer sits just below the surface attached to a low-profile float and sends ultrasonic waves at 180 degrees through the water killing all algae within range. It works because the sonar vibrations rip the outer membrane (vacuole) of the algae, killing it.

The most important criteria for choosing your system isn't the volume of water in your pond, lake or basin but the distance that must be covered by the ultrasonic waves. The XXL unit has a stated range of 500 feet for most roaming algae (angel hair, blanket weed, filamentous algae) and 1300 feet for dangerous blue green algae. Rate of kill and effectiveness depends on retention time, water movement, water clarity etc.

For ponds requiring shorter distances the XL unit has a range of 325 feet and the POOL unit has a range of 165 feet.

The rate at which treatment results are obtained will depend on the algae being targetted as different algae respond to the ultrasound over different lengths of time. Typical results are acheived within 1 to 3 weeks and there is no other ultrasound device on the market that performs better than the XXL model.
You can use two or more units when treating larger lakes and ponds.

Benefits of using ultrasound for algae control:
• No harsh chemicals or toxic products, LG Sonic is the environmentally safe way to kill algae.
• Simple to install the unit runs on regular electrical current (110 or 220V) with no risk to swimmers.
• No moving parts or filters to replace the units are virtually maintenance free. Silent operation.
• Low operating cost. Using only 25 watts means effective anti-algae treatment for pennies a day.
• LG Sonic XXL kills blue green algae to a distance of 400 meters (1300 feet)
• Effectively removes bio-film from boat hulls, swimming pools, storage tanks, etc.
• Kills and controls roaming green algae, string algae as well as other algae to 500 feet.
• Affordably priced and a practical solution to eliminate constant applications of chemical treatments
• Combining ultrasonic algae killers with proper beneficial bacteria applications greatly improve pond health.

Algae types NOT killed by ultrasound:
1. Chara (mimics the habits of vascular plants)
2. Nitella (mimics the habits of vascular plants, less rigid structure than Chara)
3. Euglena (mimics a Protozoa, free swimming and light driven)
4. Pediastrum (multi-celled algae in three stages; 8 celled, 16 celled, 32 celled)
5. Oscillatoria (free roaming algae, resembles and moves like a green worm)

Algae types with 75%-95% ultrasound effectiveness:
1. Microcystis Colonial Algae (produces a gelatinous mass and harder to control in larger colonies, 75% ultrasound effectiveness)
2. Pithophora (Cotton-ball Roaming Algae, produces hard cell walls and takes 6-8 weeks for control, 95% ultrasound effectiveness)
3. Cylindrospermopsis Raciborskii (free roaming algae, light driven, 75% ultrasound effectiveness)

CanadianPond.ca Products Limited has spent close to a decade testing products to ensure that clients who use our services are only offered the best available pond products on the market. We are currently gathering test date from installations of the LG Sonic throughout Canada so we can provide you with more concrete testing data which is required by our Environmental Groups & Government Departments. As our testing unfolds we will provide Canadian data on the effectiveness of ultra-sound on algae in our country.

Currently, we find the best, most proven algae control system is a combination of aeration and beneficial bacteria.

LG Sonic® company literature shows impressive before and after photographic results such as these two images below. Such dramatic images are sure to raise interest in the system yet all the data must be analyzed before proclaiming ultra-sound as the miracle cure for problem algae in lakes and large bodies of water. Testing is currently underway in many areas around the world to determine that such claims can be scientifically verified.

The transducer (underwater speaker) was specifically designed for conditions and distances in large ponds, lakes & industrial basins. The transducer is completely waterproof and works by converting electrical energy into sonar vibrations to frequencies deadly to the majority of algae. The vibrations cannot be heard and are not dangerous to animals, humans or fish.

The low-profile floating device permits the LG SONIC XXL transductor to work 12 cm. below the water surface where it is inconspicuous. This design allows the sonar wave to reflect from the water surface back into the water body, more fully reaching algae in the water body. The sonar vibrations rip the outer membrane (vacuole) of the algae, killing it.

Technical details of the XXL

  • Range : 150 meters (approx. 500') for most algae. 400 meters (approx. 1300') for blue-green algae
  • Power Consumption : 25 Watts
  • Input 120 V ou 220 V
  • Cable Length : 17 meters (approx. 56')

Installation basics
The electric box must be installed in a dry and protected place such as a pool shed. As with any electrical installation, follow local regulations carefully. In Canada the most common system used is 120 Volt AC which can be easily integrated into a solar system where electricity is unavailable.

If you find you have a portion of the cable that is too long for linking the transducer to the box, make sure the cable does not coil or cross over itself as this may set up an induction field and reduce the signal output power. Lay and secure the cable in a zigzag pattern or contact us for shortening instructions.

After connecting the plug from the transducer into the corresponding location on the box, submerge the device so that it looks forward into the water body you want treated. The goal is to treat as much water as possible within range of your system. As soon as the transducer is connected to the electrical box, the system is in operation and the light will begin blinking, indicating the ultrasonic signal is being sent from the box to the submerged transducer. At no time is electrical current being placed in the water. The power is used to vibrate components in the transducer which in turn create the ultrasonic wave.

The ultrasonic vibration waves leave the transducer in approximately a 180 degree arc that expands vertically and horizontally outward into the water body. Sonic waves will reflect down into the water from the water surface covering as much area as possible. The sonic waves work immediately to damage the algae cell membrane and so within several days you may see more algae (which are simply dead algae floating to the surface). It is recommended to remove dead floating algae if possible as this make the sonic waves that reflect from the water surface down into the water, work more efficiently.

Dead algae will also sink and accumulate on the pond bottom. This accumulation of organic material can increase the risk of future growths of algae and may, over time, become part of the smelly bottom muck. To help eliminate the dead algae from the pond a treatment of natural beneficial bacteria can be used in tandem with the LG Sonic system. Ensure that your ultrasonic device is not in use while adding beneficial bacteria as the sound waves will impede proper bacterial function.
