Grease Build-up and Associated Problems

Grease accumulation in drains, sewers, lift stations and wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) causes many problems. Grease solidification and build-up restricts flow and can cause the complete blockages and back ups. Grease accumulation on pumps causes them to over heat and burn out. Grease build-up provides an anaerobic environment favorable to the growth detrimental bacteria, which produce noxious odors of hydrogen sulfide or even highly toxic and explosive gases such as methane. Hydrogen sulfide in the zones with oxygen such as gravity sewers and lift stations becomes a food source for sulfate oxidizing bacteria (Thiobacillus); they convert the hydrogen sulfide into sulfuric acid, which dissolves concrete and metal structures within sewers, lift stations and even manholes covers.
 
As bad as this is, there are even more problems caused by grease. Grease, in the aeration basin, reduces oxygen transfer on two levels: the floc and the water surface. Grease also causes problems of poor settling and foaming as it represents the food of some filamentous organisms, such as Microtrix Parvicella, and Nocardia Amarae. Excessive grease content in the sludge reduces dewatering efficiency. The thickening of the sludge could be also affected because of the rapid development of anaerobic conditions that will cause sludge floating.
 

Bacta-Pur® System for Efficient Grease Reduction

The Bacta-Pur® system controls all of these problems biologically and cost-effectively. First of all, the addition of Bacta-Pur® XLG assures the presence of a balanced community of natural beneficial microorganisms, which have been selected for their synergistic ability to digest of fat, grease and oil (FOGs). Bacta-Pur® XLG contains the diversified community, not just Bacillus strains, which can upset settling. This diversified community enhances overall treatment performance including the ability to reduce BOD loading before the WWTP and to save energy. This contributes to reducing the causes of global warming. Moreover, no surfactants, emulsifiers and/or other similar chemicals, which relocate grease downstream, are ever incorporated in Bacta-Pur® products.
 
Other systems provide dormant cultures poured or pumped from a bottle or pail. Dormant cultures from these systems will flow through and out of collection system before being activated. The Bacta-Pur® System continuously introduces active and famished cultures in the highest concentration and in the optimal condition for grease digestion. This is the only way to control and prevent grease accumulation even within the short retention time and harsh conditions of collection systems. Optimal activity and physiological condition of the ECOPROBIOTICS™ is assured by the BACTIVATOR®, which adds the cultures 24 hours per day to the waste water stream.
 

Preventive maintenance with Bacta-Pur®

The beneficial bacteria attach to the grease, and start the digestion processes, which lowers the melting point and softens the grease. The force of the current will break off the softened grease. Faster moving water has more energy and scouring ability; accordingly it is normal to expect that such systems will result in faster cleaning of the lines than ones with slow flow. Low flow has very little energy or scouring ability. In either case, once the lines are cleaned, this situation will be maintained, and upstream spills will also be digested. The biological biodegradation of grease (lipid catabolism), does not create downstream problems such as re-accumulating grease deposits. This type of problem is caused by the addition of chemicals (surfactants, emulsifiers, industrial soaps, alcohol and/or enzymes), with some claiming to be biological.
 
Best results are achieved by introducing Bacta-Pur® XLG continuously into the most upstream location. The daily dosage rate for typical municipal wastewater is 0.8 ppm, based on the average daily flow. Areas with high levels of grease, such as a great number of restaurants or food processing plants… may need higher doses. The Bacta-Pur® System cleans sewer lines and reduces solids build-ups, it can also decrease BOD before even getting to the WWTP and improve settling in the WWTP. The ability to decrease BOD before WWTPs means that the Bacta-Pur® System can reduce pollution in storm water, overflows and in systems without biological treatment such as only primary treatment. Furthermore, the Bacta-Pur® System reduces causes of global warming by reducing energy consumption.
