Applying your dry bacteria

Bacterius pond bacteria products come in soluble pouches that are thrown into the pond. They work best when they are tossed near the aeration system, floating fountain or in-flowing water source or cascade. The movement of the water helps "steep" the bacterial pouch much the way a tea-bag is helped to release its content by adding gentle agitation. If there is little or no surface movement or aeration system the pouches should be cut open and mixed with pond water and then splashed across the pond surface much the same way liquid bacteria is administered.

There are three treatments that are recommended. If your pond is already infested with algae and poor water quality an initial "shock treatment" of a high dose of bacteria is added followed by a treatment the following week and then a treatment every two or three weeks depending on the results obtained. A pond which is beginning to show the initial problems inherent with murky water and algae growth but has not yet progressed to an alarming state of eutrophication requires a milder initial treatment followed by a maintenance dose. For ponds and water gardens that are relatively healthy a low maintenance dosage is added on a two or three-week program depending on environmental factors and achieved results.

How to add your bacteria

The small pond pictured at left was originally smaller and we enlarged it with excavation and surrounded it with natural landscaping. To maintain clear water and reduce the organic build-up from leaves and other sludge producing organic materials we started by adding an aerator which can be seen lightly bubbling to the left in this photo. This spring, after an evaluation of the water and pond-bottom showed typical muck build-up and algae growth, we began the recommended treatment to restore the pond to a healthy state. Without aeration the build-up of smelly sludge and organic muck would have been much greater. Now, in this pond, the addition of bacteria will render the pond clear and clean.

If your pond has no natural source of quality aeration then before adding beneficial bacteria is essential. The bacteria require oxygen to survive so that they may live, grow and feed upon the organic materials and algae in your pond. To mix the bacteria for your pond a large bucket is used to mix the liquid bacteria in specified proportions with pond water. Do not use chlorinated tap-water to mix your bacteria. Once the bacteria has been correctly diluted and mixed you simply distribute the bacterial solution equally around the perimeter of the pond. Treatments are usually performed once per week. We will help you with the necessary dosage according to the size and topography of your pond.
