Technical Information

To calculate your liner dimensions:

          2 x Pond depth + Pond width + 2 Feet = required liner width
          2 x Pond depth + Pond length + 2 Feet = required liner length

Always protect your liner under and over with a water garden felt

BUILDING A LINER POND:

Excavation:
The pit is planned and dug according to what kinds of plants will be kept in it. Constructing a pond with areas of different depth allows a greater variety of aquatic plants to be kept in it. These levels can vary between 6 and 12 inches deep. Also, depending on the type of border desired around the edge of the pond (rocks, for example), a level to install this safety border will have to be dug. A 2-foot-deep area is needed for plants to survive in winter, and a 3-foot-deep area is necessary for fish to do so. Walls within the pond should be at a 20 to 30-degree angle.

Stones and roots must be removed, as they could puncture the liner. The ground is covered in 2 inches of wet sand, which should be pressed with a roller if possible. The borders of the pond must be checked to make sure they are all at the same level.

Geo-textile:
Geo-textile is a non-woven felt cloth installed over the whole bottom of the pit before the liner is installed.
The entire pit is surrounded by a 6 to 12-inch-wide apron of geo-textile.
This cloth protects the liner from being punctured by stones or roots.

Creating a border:
Remember that the liner surrounding the pond must not be exposed to UV radiation.
The border material should therefore cover the liner.
Many kinds of materials can be used for borders: flat stones, cobblestones, decorative rocks, logs, plants, etc.
